Student voice has created a chat every Monday evening at 7:30pm. The chat is held through a common hashtag: #stuvoice. Students and teachers give their honest opinions on what they believe education should be and what should be changed. Every session is guided by a different discussion topic; today the topic was F A M I L Y E N G A G E M E N T. Whether you've previously been participating in #stuvoice, or you're a newcomer to the chat will make no difference.
The first thing you do when joining the chat is introducing yourself to the rest of #stuvoice.
Before my first tweet to #stuvoice I was so nervous; I kept on asking Pedro, who has participated in many #stuvoice chats before, what it was, how it worked and how I would interact with these people who I have never spoken to before. I kept complaining that I didn't get what the people were talking about or how it was done. But when the time came, I introduced myself to the chat and so it all began.

I wouldn't have thought that I would be participating in a twitter discussion; I took all my nerves and turned them into excitement; it wasn't as hard as it seemed. topic is given ahead of time; todays discussion topic was
F A M I L Y E N G A G E M E N T . The first question appeared on #stuvoice; I tweeted out my response and next thing I knew people were retweeting me, mentioning me in tweets and comments and commenting on my opinions of what impacts family engagement has on education. It was as simple as that. One simple tweet was the starting point of various conversations. Time seemed to fly by; one minute you were replying to Q4 and the next thing you know, others on #stuvoice are already replying to Q6. I quickly had to reply the two previous questions, which apparently I had missed while having a conversation on the importance of learning from failure. By that time it was 8:30 and #stuvoice chat was over.
In just one hour twitter managed to give me new experiences I had never had before: I introduced myself to a new group of people, I give my opinion regarding education and family engagement, I talked with others about certain ideas such the importance of parents giving their children autonomy or the importance of learning through making mistakes.
Twitter is an outstanding place to spread ideas or share experiences with others who care about the same topic as you. My eyes were glued to the computer screen as I read through others answers to the questions posted. Everyone had their own opinions with different views on the same topic; in the end everyone would agree on what others would have to say, overall, everyone felt the same way about education.
They all believed in the autonomy, risk, rigor , trust or even the communication children had in education. Even though I had no idea who I was talking to through #stuvoice, I was able to communicate with them through shared thoughts on education. I later looked up who I was contributing with and realized that I had talked to a variety of people with varied lifestyles. I had talked to teachers, students, mothers and fathers whom each were entitled to their own opinion, yet had opinions on others experiences which built conversations.

It was my first time on #stuvoice , it opened my eyes to another way to use twitter. You communicate easily and it's a fun and educational conversation all compressed into one thing. I can't wait to join in once again next monday!
