What is marketing?
Since we are at the start of the unit, we are in the stage of exploring and understanding what marketing truly is.
So, how can we analyze ad's we see daily?
Check these things out:
-Context
-Purpose: -Pathos: an appeal to an emotion
-Ethos: an appeal to logic or reason
-Logos: an appeal to credibility or character
-Audience: demographic / market segment

The 5 P's of Marketing
-Problem
-Product/Service
-Price
-Place
-Promotion
Promotion is the last P of marketing, it is what we see all around us through different types of displays. Since the best way to learn is through experience, we took the time today to visit Jockey Plaza, the mall which is a 10 minute walk from school. There, we looked at advertisements of all sorts. As anything in the world, there were some advertisements which were better than others, there was competition between the stores.
But we wondered, what is it that makes marketing effective in a mall? What is it that attracts an audience? As a class we came up with the following ideas:
-Patterns
-Colors
-Setup of the interior of the store
-Logos
-Environment: smell, music, customer service
-Window display: mannequins, creativity
-Theme of the store
-Motif
-Interactivity
-Who the targeted audience is
For me, a store which attracted me was BCBGMAXAZRIA. This store targets women and girls who are attracted to modern styles, clean finishes, and neat organization. My personality may not consist of those things, but I like to enter a store and see it organized, clean and modern. It is attractive to the eye, eye candy, making me want to buy everything in the store. As soon as I entered the door, I was greeted by the employee in a kind manner; I was asked how my day was and if I needed help in finding anything that I should let her know. The store was organized incredibly, there was a section of short dresses, long dresses, bottoms, tops, and accessories/shoes. This store will attract the younger audience (between ages 16 to early 30's since the store is built around their likings).

Just as theres always a good side to how marketing should be done, such as BCBGMAXAZRIA, there is also bad marketing, such as United Colors of Benetton.
The window display at the United Colors of Benetton didn't catch my attention what so ever. The mannequins were children with white hair making them look weird, and were places with not so colorful clothes, not making much sense since the name of the store has "color" in it.

As we walked around in Jockey, we saw so many adds, that I never had taken the time to even notice before when I would go with my friends.
Marketing surrounds us all day everyday, no matter where you are you are bound to be surrounded by the final phase of marketing: promotion. We can't forget of the other phases which lead up to the promotion, for without them society wouldn't evolve.
