Watching The Great Gatsby after reading the book gives you another perspective on how the movie was made and the effect the movie has on the audience.
In my opinion the movie was very well done in the sense of characters, costumes, capturing the feeling of the roaring 20's and of course the theme of the movie. The Great Gatsby movie, as in the book was full of rich english, which was at times hard to understand while reading, but by watching the movie I was getting the visual feel which was harder to achieve while reading the book.
The set design was outstanding as well as the choice in costumes, actors, music, structure, camera angles, dialog and of course the theme. Not many people will notice the theme of the movie by watching it the first time. It took me until the 3rd watch to understand everything that was going on, analyzing the movie was very helpful; knowing who the characters were and how they react and act helped in the understanding of the movie and lead to a more clear ending of which I hadn't noticed before, I saw the movie through the eyes of another person, understanding it in greater depth than ever before. The storyline its self is incredible, a man who is madly in love with a woman whom he had lost previously, yet wanting to bring back the past, change it and move forward as if the time had never stopped and they had never been pulled apart. His dream, his future, his everything was right in front of him but at the same time it was slipping away in front of his own eyes.
Wealth was everything, wether you were newly rich or born rich, it was not the same in the eyes of the rich. East Egg was born rich and West Egg was newly rich, Daisy juggling between two different rich men; both men in love, but one who was full of himself and the other full of ambition. Jay Gatsby devoted his life to Daisy, though she was not aware, it was all for her.
"It was a strange coincidence," I said.
"But it wasn't a coincidence at all."
"Why not?"
"Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay." (4.137-140)

Gatsby did everything he could to be with Daisy, he was ostentatious for Daisy, hoping she would notice and come back to him leaving Tom once and for all. Gatsby wanted to have Daisy for himself, so they could live the life he had always visioned them having together. He asked too much of Daisy. Gatsby had revolved his life around achieving this one dream, he did everything to be able to get the love of his life back into his arms. The movie was told in a manner that made me understand the meaning of the book and the shadow american dream, none which could have been done without the costumes, actors, the script, structure, camera techniques, props and of course the music.
Watching the Great Gatsby after reading the book, and while analyzing the movie looking for notes on the music through out the film gave me a different view on the movie. When I had watched it before knowing the theme or the story of what was happening I never really understood what was happening, it was just a story about love, parties and money. It made me look at details I hadn't seen before and it made me feel things I hadn't felt. Analyzing the movie from the perspective of the music was a surprise to me. I never realized how important music has on the effect when watching the movie. Music gives feelings that enhance the scenario of a scene, it makes it more intimate, more frustrating, it allows the audience to comprehend how the charter feels, what the character thinks, who the character is. Music takes such a large role in film making, but you have to know how to use music in the correct ways,The Great Gatsby used their selection in music in an incredible way, combining music from the 20's and giving it a modern twist.

Here are some notes I took on the movie while watching it and analyzing the music.
-Old time music (orchestra with chimes and while opening up the music = mysterious, soft, calm (warner bros part)
-Music describing New York is very modern, like rap but with a band which is pumping= ambitious
-Gatsby= mysterious music
-Whimsical music when daisy appears in the room with the curtains flying, makes it seem like its a dream making her sound graceful
-Valley of ashes is described through hard music with drums and a darkness feeling
-Music describing the partying is always so much more alive and modern, describing things in new york. shows a wild afternoon and craziness.
-Music when Gatsby introduced himself, makes him sound very important and luxurious and important
-Music at a rich lunch place is about richness "hundred dollar bill"
-Telling the story of the past Daisy and Gatsby, music sounds like music that would be in a happy dream, clam and peaceful.
-No music to create a sense of awkwardness.
-Sad music when Gatsby realized that his dream future with Daisy may be finished forever
-Flashbacks bring heavy intense music because gatsby fears he won't return to them, or he fears that the green light won't return (his dream).
-Revealing the past of Gatsby, gives sense of adventure, ambition
-Same song was used when Gatsby and Daisy are together alone (making connecting feelings)
-Music starts to gets intense, the sense of panic is seen when Tom finds out that Daisy had told Gatsby she loved him, and from then on Tom is mad and driving like a crazy person
-When Gatsby lost control strong music came on
-Music makes death seem so much more intense and sad from the point of vie of both myrtles husband and tom
-Music intensifies the moment that nick discovers it was daisy who ran over Myrtle
-Music makes you feel the desperation of the night, the intensity of what occurred.
-Music makes the scene when Gatsby finally reveals the whole truth, makes him seem like a real person not just a rich person, makes it feel like hope and how passionate he was
-As he is dying and falling back into the pool the music makes it seem as though his dream is coming to an end, he sees the green light go away. meaning his future, his daisy his life has ended.
-Music is sad and makes it feel like unfair, unjust.
-Music describing newyork is no longer happy and joyful full of life, it now is sad and depressing, giving the feeling that there is nothing left in new york.
