Theres always a purpose to what we do, if not we wouldn't be doing it. And if we are doing things without a purpose, then it's a waste of our time. Purpose drives life, everything has a purpose, whether it's a company or a person, we all have goals and visions of how we want to succeed in life, what we want to live by. We have goals, morals, mission statements that we follow and use to guide ourselves.
For those of you who don't know, may be asking yourselves what a mission statement is...
I'll answer that for you.
A mission statement is a formal summary of the aims and values of a company, organization, or individual.
Different companies have their own mission statements, it guides the company in the direction they want to be lead into. Don't get confused, a slogan is not the same as a mission statement. Here
are a few mission statements from companies you most likely know. "To bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world." -Nike
"Organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful." -Google
"Give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected." -Facebook
Roosevelt has a mission statement, and so does the Innovation Academy. What we did today in class was discuss our mission statement, re-visit it to make sure it still applied to what we were doing and where we saw ourselves going. After reading our mission statement as a class, we decided to re-write our mission statement. Little did we know how much thought is actually put into making one. So, what was it that we did?
After almost a full day of hard work recreating our mission statement here was the outcome.
1. Broke into groups and answered these questions: -Why does the IA exist? -What are the strengths of the IA? -What do we value as an academy? -What contributions does the IA make to education? 2. We discussed as a class each one; we shared what we came up with in our smaller groups 3. We summarized all our thoughts into 5 main ideas that really describe the IA 4. We each wrote a mission statement that tied in all those 5 ideas 5. We went through each one and got what we liked form them 6. Combining what we liked the most, we created our first draft of the new mission statement 7. We finalized the mission statement. |
To exemplify a culture of excellence, create passion for learning, and adapt the way we learn to improve the way we live.
We are in love with the mission statement now, not just because it says exactly what the IA is, but also because WE made it, we had a say in what the mission statement of the academy is. I believe it is powerful, clean, clear and simple. It ties in our mission for the IA very well. But why stop there?! Why not create mission statements for each of the Innovators.
We took the rest of the day creating our personal mission statements, following the same procedure as before. We had an hour to reflect on who we are and what we love in life and what drives us daily. We thought about the purpose of what we do, and what we feel. We got to share what we had found out about ourselves, then we got straight to it: we wrote our mission statements. Once we had it, we wrote them on the wall so everyone could see. Having my own mission statement is incredible, I love knowing what my drive is, what pulls me forward and makes me want to go out in life and do things.
This is my mission statement. This is what I stand for.
