One year left of high school and as scary as that may be, we must prepare ourselves for the next phase of our lives: college. Im not sure as to where I will end up going, but at this point I'm starting to narrow down all possibilities. It's all an exciting yet overwhelming experience, which is why Helena, a friend in Dallas, and I have turned over to seek some professional help.
I'm still going through the process of figuring out where I will apply to college. Our teacher for this college essay tutoring showed me an application form that works as a common app within Texas. Since I am definitely going to be applying within Texas, I am taking advantage of this and using it in my favor.

Writing a college essay is nothing like writing an essay for the ACT or SAT or for school. The only thing these four have in common is that a real person reads them, not a computer. It's a long process deciding what to write about. Once you have a topic and sort of a thesis to guide you into answering the question, all the rest just seems to flow naturally onto the paper.
My second class with Helena is coming up Thursday, by then we must bring in our first essays complete so we can look them over and peer edit. One thing I learned was that peer editing with people who know you isn't always the best idea. Though you may have confidence with each other and know they are good at english, they have also developed a bias for you and your stories. They can visually fill in any blanks in your writing so that it makes sense, something that a stranger could never do. That is why it is recommended for your editors to hear your story for the first time when they are reading and editing your essay, so that no biases come into place and so the editing is done in a manner that will help you develop a visual essay for all audiences who may read it. |
It's not going to be easy to write an essay knowing how much pressure this has on my future, but, I know that once I have a topic I am excited about and passionate towards, it will be easier than it seems to get my ideas and thoughts out on paper.
So... lets get this process started!
